About Us

The Chicago Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons is a dental specialty organization dedicated to the following mission: 

The purpose of the Society shall be to promote and advance the art and science of oral and maxillofacial surgery and the betterment of public health primarily through educational programs relating to oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Dr. Don C. Kalant, Sr., received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Loyola University. He served his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center and Hines V.A. Medical Center. Dr. Kalant also holds an Active Membership in the International Society of Oral Implantologists, and the Academy of Osseointegration. He is certified by the American College of Surgeons in Advanced Trauma Life Support, by the American Heart Association in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and is an Instructor in Basic Life Support.

Emily Smythe, DDS

Dr. Emily Smythe received her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Maryland. She then went on to complete an internship and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, which is affiliated with Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee VA Hospital. Dr. Smythe is Board-Certified through the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. She is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and is a Basic Life Support Instructor.

Dr. Baptist earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree at University of Illinois Chicago, College of Dentistry.  He completed his residency training at Loyola University Medical Center where he continues on as an Associate Professor of Surgery as a part-time attending covering call with the residents.  He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Mariusz Wrzosek, DDS

Dr. Wrzosek is board-certified and a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He completed his undergraduate engineering studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He earned his dental degree from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He then served on active duty in the Navy and returned to residency. He earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School and completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He is now an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center, still serves in the Navy Reserve in the Great Lakes region and is also Adjunct Faculty at Midwestern University College of Dentistry.

Past-President

Dr. Stephen MacLeod is a Professor of Surgery at Loyola University and Director of the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Medicine at Loyola University Medical Center.  He attended Dental school at the University of Dundee and Medical School at the  University Aberdeen.  His surgical training was in Scotland and the University of Louisville. He is a fellow in the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh,  and is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

After completing his undergraduate studies at The Ohio State University, Dr. Firas Katabi went on to study dentistry at Case Western Reserve University, where he received his DDS in 1998. His specialty training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery was completed at Lincoln Medical Center affiliated with  Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York in 2002.  Dr. Katabi has three board certifications – American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry.   Other affiliations include: Fellow in American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, The American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, International Congress of Implantology, as well as numerous other local, national, and international professional memberships. Currently he is in private practice at  Armitage Oral Surgery in the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago.

As President of My Own Admin, Inc., Maureen Radecki has 26 years of dental organization management experience.  Prior to starting her business, she was the managing editor of several national decorating magazines/catalogs.  She graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in American Studies.
